Designer Notes: This scenario describes the German counterattacks south of Bogodukhov by III.Pzk and XXIV.Pzk on August 11-17th.
Scenario Briefing: After German lines broke during the early stages of Operation Rumyantsev, the Soviet Tank Armies set out in pursuit of units retreating towards the cities of Kharkov, Boromlya and Trostyanets, where PzAOK.4 intended to create a new line of defense. A hole was created in the center of the German position which the Soviets took advantage of to advance through, encircling those units in the city of Bogodukhov. Next, they crossed the Merla and Merchik rivers and cut off the important railway line from Poltava to Kharkov, isolating the city. German command designed a counterattack to regain the initiative and close the huge gap between PzAOK.4 and Armee-Abteilung Kempf. To accomplish this feat, they planned a double attack from the north, in the area of Akhtyrka, and from the south, the area of Bogodukhov. The critical factor was the time it would take the Germans to reposition the necessary units for the attack, all while the Soviets continued to advance. The first to arrive were the SS Divisions Totenkopf, Das Reich and Viking, which together with the 3rd Panzer Division formed the III.PzK. This large formation would attack from the south towards Akhtyrka and Bogodukhov across the Merla and Merchik rivers. From the north, XXIV.PzK with the Grossdeutschland, 7th Panzer and 10th Panzergrenadier Divisions would launch a southbound attack to close the hole and trap the overstretched Soviet Tank Armies. The Germans had difficulty with redeployment of the units that would form the XXIV.PzK, except for Grossdeutschland which was already in the area. They were not prepared to launch the operation simultaneously with the III.PzK which had to begin its attack alone, with the XXIV.PzK only following suit days later.
Recommended Rules: (Default) \Alternative Assault Resolution, Artillery Set Up, Recon Spotting, Virtual Supply Trucks, Low Visibility Air Effects, Quality Fatigue Modifier, Counterbattery Fire, Night Fatigue, Programmed weather, Limited Air Recon.

I found it somewhat confusing what to do with my Axis troops and wherever I went there was a complete Soviet superiority. That's to be expected for the German experience from Summer 1943 ondwards, I guess.
It's also a bit crippling that the units get the low ammo status immediately once they are surrounded: they should have full ammo for one more turn and only when having fired once go into the low ammo status. But that's the engine, of course, and got nothing to do with the particular scenario.
With all that being said, my opponent simply played much better and deliberately than I did.
