Scenario Briefing: With the capture of Palo by the US 24th Division, and the securing of the Tacloban airfield and San Jacinto Strait by the US 1st Cavalry Division, the X Corps looked to spread out into the upper Leyte Valley and advance north to Carigara. From there they would enter the upper Ormoc Valley by skirting around the high mountain range that divides the two valleys via the coastal road.
On 26th October the 24th Division launched their attack with elements of the 1st Cavalry Division guarding their right flank. With the 34th Regimental Combat Team (RCT) on the right and the 19th RCT on the left, the 24th Division advanced north and east, respectively, meeting scant opposition until the latter regiment ran into a strong position at Pastrana. The battle for the town raged for most of the evening of the 26th with the Japanese defenders holding out until the next morning.
Meanwhile, the 34th RCT advanced north to Mainit and Cavite running into determined opposition first from remnants of the 33rd Infantry Regiment (IR) and then from the newly arrived 41st IR of the IJA 30th Division. The Japanese were hoping to concentrate their reinforcements around Jaro but the speed of the US attack precluded any chance of a successful defense. More Japanese units arrived from Carigara and while the defense was strong it was unable to stem the Allied tide. By 2 November, the US forces, supported by Filipino units, had reached Carigaria The upper Leyte Valley was now in the hands of the Allies.
