Scenario Briefing: By the middle of February, General Yamashita had intended to hold positions in the mountains inland from the west coast of northern Luzon. The Bessang Pass, leading from the coast to Cervantes, a key point in Yamashita's defensive line, had to be held in order to ensure the integrity of the Japanese position.
The 121st Infantry, USAFIP, NL was tasked with taking the Bessang Pass and capturing Cervantes which would divide the Shobu Group's defensive line in two.
The only Japanese unit holding the pass. at that time, was the 357th Independent Infantry Battalion. Elements of the 73rd Infantry Regiment were sent to aid in the defense. With the Battle of Baguio raging to the south these Japanese forces would be on their own.
The 121st began their attack on March 29th. Initially they were able to gain some of the positions in the hills but were halted and had to dig in after the attack ground to a halt.
Meanwhile, earlier in March, L Company of the 121st had attacked Cervantes and taken the town. However, they were driven out in the middle of the month but were once again able to eject the small garrison stationed there. A Provisional Battalion was formed from various companies of the Filipino Division to help them hold the town. However, by early April the Japanese attacked with the 73rd Infantry Regiment and were able to drive the Provisional Battalion up into the hills and out of the battle.
The initial attack by the 121st had gone well but credit must be given to the Japanese for being able to counter their initial moves. The entire battle would last until the middle of June. This action portrays the initial attack by the Filipino Division to take the pass.
