The 63rd RCT, in the center of the line on Mt Mataba, would be providing covering fire for the 145th to the north. Additional corps artillery was called in to provide support fire as well.
The attack got off to a good start and for over a week the 145th tried to wrest control of Mt.Pacawagan from the Japanese but the troops of the Kobayahsi Force continued to fight tenaciously denying the US forces control of the summit. By the ninth day of the offensive the 145th had lost 275 men killed or wounded and they had to call a halt to the attack. It would not be until the end of May that the dam would finally be taken.
