Date: March 6, 1945 - Size: Large - Location: South of Lake Balaton , 160 km SW of Budapest.
Intended for Axis player.
Scenario Briefing: In tandem with other German attacks that formed a part of Operation Spring Awakening, the German planned two Operations to advance south of Lake Balaton aimed to surround and annihilate the Soviet 57th Army and 1st Bulgarian Army (plus an additional Yugoslav Corps) west of the Danube.
German forces south of Lake Balaton were organized into two groups. The northern group (Operation Icebreaker -Eisbrecher-) was General de Angelis' 2nd Panzer Army which had the town of Kaposvár as its objective. Facing the 2nd Panzer Army's northern flank was General Sharokhin's Soviet 57th Army alongside the 3rd Corps of General Toshev's Bulgarian 1st Army.
The southern group was General von Erdmannsdorff's LXXXXI Corps (renamed LXXXXI z.b.v. under 2nd Panzer Army for Operationl Forest Devil -Waldteufel- ) in northern Yugoslavia. LXXXXI Corps had concentrated near Donji Miholjac and Valpovo. Across the Drava River at Donji Miholjac, the 4th Corps of General Trendafilov's 1st Bulgarian Army defended the routes leading to Pécs and Mohács. Northeast of Valpovo and across the Drava, General Nadj's 12th Corps of 3rd Yugoslav National Liberation Army defended the routes leading to northeast Yugoslavia.
An attack in these areas offered the Germans the opportunities of attacking the less well equipped Bulgarians and Yugoslavs as well as potentially rolling up the Soviet southern flank.
Design Notes: This is a shortened version of #45_0306_03_2nd_Panzer_Army_The_Long_River_Flank covering the fighting for March 6 to March 9 with less Objectives (and lower Victory Threshold).
Recommended Rules: [Default] Alternative Assault Resolution, Artillery Set Up, Recon Spotting, Virtual Supply Trucks, Low Visibility Air Effects, Quality Fatigue Modifier, Counterbattery Fire, Night Fatigue, Programmed Weather, Limited Air Recon.
Intended for Axis player.
