Two infantry divisions of this Corps, the 297th and 104th, crossed the Drava near Donji Miholjac and assaulted the Bulgarian 4th Corps. Near Valpovo, the 11th Luftwaffen Field Division crossed the Drava River and were reinforced by two regiments of Cossack cavalrymen of the 1st Cossack Division. During March 8-9, Marshal Tolbukhin ordered two Soviet Rifle Divisions (84th and 122nd) to reinforce the Bulgarian IV Corps. Additional reinforcements from the 12th Corps of the 3rd Yugoslav Army arrived from the east. The fighting raged on until the 14th of March when the collapse of other fronts convinced the German High Command to call off the offensive, clear the two bridgeheads, and send this Corps to try to hold the crumbling areas.
