Scenario Briefing: On March 8, I SS-Panzer Corps’ attack gained momentum, and by early morning Antalmajor and Hill 191 had been secured against minimal opposition, as had the Enying-Dég road being cut at Osztelek (west of Dég.) However the failure of II SS-Panzer Corps to make progress on the east side of the Sarviz canal was inevitably causing deep concern at Headquarters Army Group South. 1st SS-Panzer Division had to deploy an spread flank guard while pushing toward Dég and Mesozsilla.
At Antalmajor-Hill 191 the Soviets launched a strong counterattack led by the 208th Anti-Tank Brigade equipped with the powerful SU-100 and supported by the 43rd Anti-Tank Brigade (towed) and the 236th Rifle Division (fresh from reserve). SS-Panzer Regiment 1 was seriously depleted with only 23 tanks and 7 tank destroyers (another 41 tanks and 15 tank destroyers were under repair at short notice).
The King Tiger and SU-100 tanks tested their strength in the mud while on the right flank both sides tried to gain control over the Canal bridges.
