Date: March 12, 1945 - Size: Medium - Location: 60 km SW of Budapest.
Intended for Axis or Soviet player.
Scenario Briefing: On the March 12, the 2nd SS-Panzer Division launched an attack that General Otto Weidinger, commanding general, described as "straight out of the textbook". It was successful and by mid-morning had reached an important village southeast of Sarkeresztur known as Heinrichmajor. At the same time, on the right flank a vineyard immediately northeast of Sarkeresztur was captured, effectively cutting off Aba, which was cleared by the 44th Infanttry Division later in the day. The attack in the Heinrichmajor area was stopped by the 1st Guards Mechanized Corps, followed by two Soviet counterattacks which were repulsed, however, despite these advances there was little doubt that the offensive was losing steam. The II SS-Panzer Corps had been decisively stopped.
From March 13-14, II-SS Panzer Corps remained in a defensive posture with the 9th SS-Panzer Division still in front of Sarosd and southeast of Seregelyes faced serious attempts by the 18th Tank Corps to cut off and pocket II-SS Panzer Corps, and the 2nd SS-Panzer Division in a semicircle around Sarkeresztur as far as Heinrichmajor. Elements of the 44th Infantry Division were just north of Sarkeresztur, and the II SS-Panzer Corps armored groups continued to repulse repeated attacks on its positions at Heinrichmajor and southeast of Seregelyes.
On the 15th a request for a withdrawal was refused even as the High Command was aware of the impending Operation Vienna Offensive to be launched just one day later.
Designer Notes: Axis has no Air power because it was all directed to support I-SS Panzer Corps.
Recommended Rules: [Default] Alternative Assault Resolution, Artillery Set Up, Recon Spotting, Virtual Supply Trucks, Low Visibility Air Effects, Quality Fatigue Modifier, Counterbattery Fire, Night Fatigue, Programmed Weather, Limited Air Recon.
