Scenario Briefing: The first phase of Operation Suvorov took place between August 7 and August 21, 1943. This phase was characterized by the fight for the cities of Spas-Demensk, Dorogobuzh, Yartsevo and Dukhovshchina that had been fortified by the Germans. These towns were part of the defensive positions that protected the approaches to the city of Smolensk. The attack was carried out in two phases. The Western Front under the command of Sokolovsky began operations on August 7 (except the 31st Army) against the positions defended by the 4. Armee of General Heinrici. The Germans had large, well-prepared field fortifications called the Büffel line to the east and the Barbarossa line to the northeast. The Initial objectives of the Western Front were Spas-Demesk, Dorogobzuh and Yartsevo, followed by Yelnya, the gateway to Smolensk. On August 13, 1943, the Kalinin Front under the command of Yeremenko joined the offensive together with the 31st Army of the Western Front. The objective of its units was to penetrate the Barbarossa Line and capture Demidov, Dukhovshschina and Yartsevo and then head towards Smolensk from the northeast. The Soviets were forced to halt operations on August 21 after intense fighting led to heavy losses suffered by units on both fronts, the exhaustion of their units, the low availability of supplies, especially ammunition and food for their troops and a period of bad weather that paralyzed air operations and made unit movements difficult. Although the Germans also suffered severe losses in their units, the transfer of reinforcements from other areas of the front, especially the Orel area, made German resistance harder than expected.
