Date: August 7th 1943 - Size: Medium - Location: Dorogobuzh Area
Intended for play as Axis vs AI or HTH
Designer Notes: The 68th Army was positioned by the Western Front in second echelon to support the main attack by the 5th, 10th Guards and 33rd Armies. For the most part it supported the attack further south but was also available to attack in the area of the 5th Army.
Scenario Briefing: The commander of the Western Front, General V.D Sokolovsky, decided to launch the main offensive in the area of the 10th Guards Army and the 33rd Army but a little further north, in the Dorogobuzh area, he planned to attack with the 5th Army and the support of a small part of the 31st Army. In this way, Sokolovsky planned to tie down the IX.AK from supporting the defenses against the main attack, and liberate the city of Dorogobuzh that the Germans had turned into a fortress. For the attack of the 5th Army, its commander, General-Leytenant Polenov, had divided his army into two groups that would converge on the city. The north wing of the 5th Army with three divisions, the 312th, 352nd and the 207th Rifle Divisions and the support of the 153rd tank brigade would attack the 35.infanterie-Division in the direction of Dorogobuzh and the southern wing of the 5th Army, with the 208th, 154th and 153rd Rifle Divisions, would attack through the 252.infanterie-Division positions to head towards Dorogobuzh from the south. The IX.AK positions were solid as the AOK.4 front was a very stable and quiet front for months, during which time the Germans had improved their defensive lines. In the second line, the Western Front positioned the 68th Army to support the main attacks and progress through the German lines. In this case, many of the 68th Army units were sent to the front almost from day one, more specifically during the afternoon of August 7 due to the difficulties that the Soviet units had in advancing through the tough and effective German defense and although for the most part they were sent in support of the 10th Guards Army and the 33rd Army, they were also available to support the 5th Army in his attack.
Recommended Rules: Alternative Assault Resolution, Artillery Set Up, Recon Spotting, Virtual Supply Trucks, Low Visibility Air Effects, Quality Fatigue Modifier, Counterbattery Fire, Night Fatigue, Programmed Weather, Limited Air Recon.
