Designer Notes: Originally, the 5th Mechanized Corps and the 6th Guards Cavalry Corps were to support the 10th Guards Army and the 33rd Army in their advance towards Spas-Demensk but due to the poor results by the 10th Army in the Kirov area they were directed on August 11 to support the 10th Army instead. However, after a march of 70 km, the Cavalry Corps received a counterorder on August 12 to go north in support of the 33rd Army, for this reason it is NOT available to support the attack of the two Soviet formations in this area.
Scenario Briefing: The main effort of the Western Front was in the Pavlinovo area. The 10th Guards Army and the 33rd Army had to assault and break the German defensive lines of the XII.AK based in the powerful Büffel Stellung, a solid fortified position built in this quiet sector of the Ostfront. The two armies involved in the attack were to be supported by the 68th Army, the 5th Mechanized Corps and the 6th Guards Cavalry Corps, but General Sokolovsky, Commander of the Western Front, made a sudden decision to send these last two units south in support of the 10th Army in the Kirov area, as the progress of this army in its attack on the LVI.PzK lines was disappointing. After a 70 km march, both corps reached that area but the 6th Guards Cavalry Corps received a counterorder to head north again in support of the 33rd Army. The fighting on the Büffel Stellung was very heavy and both the 10th Guards Army and the 33rd Army made slow progress at the cost of heavy casualties.
