Description: Although the Soviet assault on the Vogelsberg corridor was defeated, the Russians continued to attack where the opportunity allowed. In an effort to further undermine NATO resistance, POL and other rear supply areas were targeted for destruction. With the air force suffering its own setbacks, this task was increasingly handed over to specialist ground units. One such unit, the 1044th Independent Air Assault Battalion, sent elements to operate behind the front line to seek out and destroy these vital supplies.\\
In the small town of Unter-Schmitten, 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 1-13th Mechanized Infantry Battalion, stood guard over a supply depot. The fighting was still many miles away from the town and by all accounts it was not going to get any closer. Nevertheless, the men of 1st Platoon were not taking any chances and deployed their M113s to cover all approaches into the town. To bolster their defenses, a Sheridan tank was attached to the Platoon. It was by no means a front-line tank, but its large 152mm gun was menacing enough to deter to any enemy foolish enough to attack the town. At least, that was the plan...
