Description: The 3rd Battalion of ARVN 3rd Regiment had established a base a few kilometres from Tam Ky. Patroling in the area usually resulted in minor skirmishes with enemy formces no larger than platoon size.*

However, in the predawn hours of December 18, 1964, a reincorced VC battalion mounted an assault on the positions held by the ARVN 3 Bn/3 Rgt.*

The 3 Company of the ARVN battalion, commanded by a rising star in the South Vietnamese Army, Pham van Dinh was out on operations, but close enough to hear and see the assault on the battalion base area. He ordered his company to take up defensive positions in anticipation of a VC attack.*
