Launched on the 1st April 1945, the US invasion of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg had the aim of providing a launch-pad for the next and final stage of the war: the invasion and conquest of Japan.
At first the landing on the Hagushi beaches met very little resistance, but it was when the American troops advanced south towards the cities of Naha and Shuri that they encountered the main Japanese line of defense the formidable Shuri Line.
