06 JUNE 1967, NEAR RUAFA DAM, CENTRAL ROUTE TO SUEZ:\\After seizing
the dam area, Colonel Nir organized his forces to link up with
Colonel Sasson's tanks approaching from Um-Katef. Nir's force
breached the central route and began to move cautiously in an
easterly direction. At the same time, Sasson headed westward
from Um-Katef with his armored battalion. At this point in the
battle, Sharon assigned Nir's battalion to the 14th Armored Brigade.
Brigade commander, Colonel Mordechai Zippori promptly ordered
Sasson's tanks to stop firing to avoid friendly fire. After the
link up of the two armored battalions Zippori radioed to Sasson
to continue the attack against the enemy.\\The Egyptians reacted
belatedly to this initial penetration by Israeli tanks at Um-Katef.
Rather than launch his entire force in a counterattack during
the first Israeli assault, the Egyptian commander of the 288th
Tank Battalion remained relatively idle. Meanwhile, bolstered
by Nir's force, Sasson was pushing forward for a decisive breakthrough
to the Central Route. Finally, the Egyptian commander reacted
to the Israeli penetration and ordered his tankers to prepare
a stopping line in the Soviet manner. Both sides engaged in a
large tank battle between Ruafa Dam and Abu-Agheila at 05:00.
