A New Respect - The Matrix Games version of East Front II

Halasztelep, 70km SE of Budapest Hungary: [Best played as Axis] When the Soviet invasion of Hungary began in the fall of 1944 the strength of the 2nd Ukrainian Front attacking from Romania, was a far cry from the Red Army's formations further north preparing for the thrust through Poland and into Germany. The three Soviet Armies were deployed across a broad front and resupply of the operational units was very difficult. As a result there were no spectacular advances. Instead, Hungary was devoured more yard by yard than mile by mile. Under steady pressure the Germans and Hungarians slowly withdrew toward Budapest using the experience gained from years of defensive fighting to make the invaders pay for every inch of ground gained. On 3 November a combined kampfgruppe built around the Hungarian 7th Assault Artillery and German 1st/24 Pz Battalions counterattacked near Halasztelep, southwest of Cegled. Vicious fighting with elements of the 14th Guards Mechanized Brigade gave both sides a new respect for their old enemies!
