Rossosh, 165km S of Voronezh: [Best Played Against Human Opponent] This was a Doug Bevard scenario designed for play against the computer; adjusted by Mike Shepard for H2H play. In the first week of July 1942, the German 4th Panzer Army battered at Voronezh, one of the primary objectives for Operation Blue. Meanwhile the 6th Army opened the second phase of the Axis summer offensive and turned its attention towards Stalingrad, pushing the spearhead of the 40th Panzer Corps south. Early on July 7th, Major Wellmann's kampfgruppe, racing ahead of the 3rd Panzer Division, reached the outskirts of Rossosh with its bridges across the Kalitva River. His mission was to seize the crossings intact and hold them until relieved by the remainder of the division. As an added bonus, German scouts discovered a recently completed tank bridge, all three bridges would need to be taken. But the party was just beginning for the panzer troops. Wellmann and his small force had stumbled on the headquarters of Marshal Timoshenko's Southwestern Front guarded by elements of the 10th Tank Brigade!
