Magdalinovka, 80km SE of Izyum: [Best played as Axis] Like many of the minor Axis countries, Slovakia contributed troops to the campaign in Russia to secure its position with Germany. The Slovak formations were used primarily to protect the long supply lines except for the Mobile Division, which fought side by side with German units. Following the heavy fighting in southern Russia in the fall of '41, the German offensive ground slowly to a halt. Then the Russians launched their first winter offensive pushing the Axis formations back to a line between Kharkov and Taganrog. On December 5th with the temperature continuing to plunge, scouts from the Slovakian Mobile Division discovered elements of the Russian 56th Cavalry Division regrouping east of Magdalinovka at Mayorskaya. Seizing the opportunity for an ambush, Colonel Malar rushed his kampfgruppe across the frozen countryside and prepared to spring his trap on the hapless Russians.
