Zajta, 275km E of Budapest Hungary: [Best played as Allied] When the Romanians defected to the Allies it left their army at the mercy of the Russians. To insure that no forces would be left to provide opposition to an eventual post-war takeover, the Soviets took steps to grind the Romanian formations down as quickly as possible. In early October 1944, the Red Army's 2nd Ukrainian Front began a series of attacks from Romania aimed at capturing Budapest and knocking the Hungarians out of the war. Portions of the recently defected Romanian 4th Army was used to screen the right flank where it was kept busy fighting the Hungarian 2nd Army. The ancient Hungarian-Romanian animosity insured that the fighting was fierce, especially considering that the Hungarians were protecting their home soil while the Romanians were eager to please their new masters. Around Zajta, northwest of Satu-Mare, mixed armor and infantry formations from the two ancient enemies clashed on 10 October in a bloody fight to the death.
