East of Sevastopol: [Best played as Axis] General Manstein knew that the Allied siege of Sevastopol in 1854-55 had lasted 347 days with nearly 500,000 casualties before Tsar Nicholas surrendered. He had neither the time nor the manpower to waste in such a long campaign. Instead, with careful planning the Germans and their Romanian allies would capture the world's strongest fortress in twenty-seven days! The Romanian Mountain Corps was responsible for attacking over the toughest terrain of the Sevastopol assault. Their first objectives as the attack began on June 7th, were the Sugar Loaf Redoubt and the Eagle's Nest held by the Soviet 386th Rifle Division, guarding the eastern approaches to Sevastopol. The almost impenetrable undergrowth and steep terrain was just what the mountain troops had been trained for. Following an incredible five-day barrage, the 1st Mountain and 18th Infantry Divisions leapt forward and began to work their way up the steep slopes and through the Russian positions!
