Dubrovka, 30km W of Smolensk: [Best played against Human opponent] On July 13th Guderian and his Panzer Troopen met an old enemy as they approached Smolensk. The 18th Panzer Division (part of the 2nd Panzer Groups left flank), advancing along the Orsha-Smolensk motorway, came under a fierce counterattack for the second time by elements of the 1st Moscow Motor Rifle Division and the Borisov tank school, equipped with new T-34 tanks. The first meeting had been just east of Borisov on July 3rd. This time the Russians were determined to check Guderian's Blitzkrieg!

In "Checking the Blitzkreig" the Russian is tasked with the job of stopping a german mobile force, made up of a mix of german PZIII's, PzII's, armored cars, and the usual infantry and artillery. The german artillery and infantry are of terrific quality, while the tanks are weak, especially considering the tough KV's and T-34's the russians get. The russkies get tons of equipment, and I feel that if two players are familiar wit hthe scenario beforehand, the russian will nearly always win. I played extremely defensively, only showing units I needed to and hoarding every unit I could for later. Even then, I lost about 1/3 of my panzers. The rest of my force was mainly unscathed, save for the 37mm AT guns, nearly all of which were lost. This is a terrific scenario for "sneaking" ...as the map is huge and very well made. The german will have an upstill struggle ahead of him for objective hexes for the entire game though; once I grabbed my first 4 objectives, I settled into my defensive role and racked up points in kills alone. If Rustbelt had known how weak I was in AT power, he would have rolled right over me. A tactically difficult scenario for either side, this one requires much thought to go into every turn.
Thus, what is of supreme importance in war is to attack the enemy's strategy.

Russians must retreat fast but orderly at first, saving as much infantry as possible for counterattack.

A great tank battle!

I've played this one a lot. Great map. If the Russians do everything right and the Germans don't the Soviets can win or draw.

To achieve a better balance, reduce the number of T-34s and KVs available to the Allied player.
RADO
Excellent scenario. Really shows the inadequacy of German armor early in the war.

Lots of strategic options for both players. One of the better stock scenarios designed for PBEM.

Fun scenario. Germans control the first half, Soviets the second.
Resolve then, that on this very ground, with small flags waving and tinny blasts on tiny trumpets, we shall meet the enemy, and not only may he be ours, he may be us. --Walt Kelly

the russian heavy tanks are quite unstoppable.
