Clearing the Hills - The Matrix Games version of East Front II

Debrecen, Hungary (Best played against human player.): As the Russians were clearing Debrecen with the 23rd Tank Corps, they were worried about German units located in the rough terrain about 15 Kilometers east of the city. As all of their units were engaged, they were hard pressed to come up with a force to clear that area. Finally they found the 20th Guards Tank Brigade, minus all of its tanks but still with a command headquarters, to build a force with. Various units from the 5th Guards Tank Corps and from the 6th Guards Tank Army were put under its command. In the hills to the east was a small German force, Kampfgruppe Gammerler, consisting of various remnants of the 23rd Panzer Division. Its mission was to hold on to the hills in order to keep an escape route open for the German Eighth Army, which was still far to the east. On the 17th of October, the day Debrecen fell to the Russians, the 20th Guards Tank Brigade force moved out to the east, with the mission of clearing those hills.
