Counter Attack across the Zarisa - The Matrix Games version of East Front II

Zhirkovski, 125kms west of Stalingrad. (Best played as Axis). On 19 November 1942, a powerful Russian offensive broke through the Romanian 3rd Army, and threatened the German 6th Army at Stalingrad with encirclement. The only armoured reserve available to counter this threat was XLVIII Panzer Corps, consisting of the weak German 22nd Panzer Division and the Romanian 7th Cavalry and 1st Armoured Division. 1st Armoured Division were ordered to advance across the River Zarisa and link with the rest of the Corps which was attacking westwards from Peschanyi, and so cut the Soviet thrust in two.
