Dead End on the Road to Kursk - The Matrix Games version of East Front II

Prokhorovka, 80km SE of Kursk: [Best played as Axis] A week into Operation Citadel Paul Hausser's II SS-Panzer Corps was thrusting toward the important road and rail center of Prokhorovka in an effort to gain maneuvering room. Having pushed through successive Soviet defense lines in the previous days, the German advance on 12 July was met by a surprise counterattack by four tank corps and one mechanized corps of Pavel Rotmistrov's 5th Guards Tank Army. Amid clouds of dust and smoke the two forces locked in the greatest tank battle in history, resulting in a lopsided German victory: 49 panzers lost versus over 300 Soviet tanks destroyed. But the German drive to Kursk had run out of steam, and the battle at Prokhorovka proved to be the high water mark of Operation Citadel.
