On the morning of the 5th of April, the Soviet IInd Ukrainian Front was preparing to storm Nevskaia Nova Ves, a bridgehead on the Morava, essential for the defense of Viena. This is one of the most extraordinary episodes in the book of Ioan S. Dumitru, the commander of the Romanian tanks in this action. It is also very illuminating for the tactics equipment and possibilities of each opponent late in the war. After starting the briefing with his ussual statement, Nemetki,...ia bio mati!, gen. Spit, the commander of the 141st Guard Infantry division, described the forces opposing them: Hungarian regulars with the help of an AT company, pioneer company, T4 company, Stugs platoon and a heavy artillery battalion on the other side of the Morava. The HQ of the Allies is the farm on your right, between them and the town is a deep depression. The town was hidden from view, slightly sloping down towards the river. The railway was passing through a bridge over the highway, though this proved impossible to simulate correctly. The right flank of the Allies is strenghened by T4s of the 1st armored batallion. The plan was for the Soviet line to advance parallel with the road passing through the farm with the tanks moving through under the bridge. However, Dumitru overheard the German leader of Devinska, called "Burgund", massing his armor from the NE corner of the village to the southern entrance. In the meantime, the pioneers and AT companies were to man a defense line East of the town, overlooking the depression. Keeping in the mixt of the protecting infantry, the Romanian tanks moved North and enterred the town from the NE, surprising the defense. The TAs provided cover fire from the farm, advancing slowly to the NW. See readme file for directions.
