The Germans were halted at the outskirts of the city.The next day air and artillery bombardments preceded assaults by the 98.Gebirgsjager Regiment. Defending Lemberg was only a small force of about 500 men and 16 guns, known as the Lvov Obrona Narodowa Brigade, commanded by Lt.Col. Grefner. They were engaged in bloody fights, and the Polish defence might have collapsed at any minute when a battalion from the 205th Reserve Infantry Regiment arrived. Its soldiers, under the command of Major Kraus, began to fight right away and handled the situation. A couple of outlying towns remained in German hands, but the situation was stabilized, giving the Polish time to harden the defence.
