Balakleya, 70km SE of Kharkov: NIGHT [Best played against Human opponent] With the Soviet first winter offensive of '41/42 slashing back at the invading Wehrmacht, the Germans were forced onto the defense to hold what they had captured. The 44th Infantry Division held the northern edge of the Izyum Bulge, SE of Kharkov, with some armored support from the 3rd Panzer Division. Through the endless Russian winter they faced countless attacks by elements of the Soviet 57th Army determined to recapture Kharkov. The Germans clung to the villages, with their life-saving shelter while the Soviets tried to drive them out. In the 50-degree below zero temperatures the men of both sides understood the necessity of fighting for a roof, a warm corner, and a few hours sleep without the fear of freezing to death!
