Hypothetical Scenario - Kalach, 50 kilometers west of Stalingrad: Paulus realized the weakness of the Romanian and Italian troops protecting his flanks as he prepared to take the rest of Stalingrad. In order to safeguard against the possibility of the Russians encircling the Sixth Army, he kept the 11th Panzer Division in reserve to be used to crush any Soviet flanking attack. However lack of supplies, men, and tanks meant that this division was not at full strength. As the Russians began operation Uranus, the 11th Panzer Division suddenly found itself as the Sixth Army's only hope in preventing an encirclement and keeping open the vital supply lines.
