Fighting in the dark Finnish woods during the "Winter War", proved to be more than the Soviets could handle. Stripped of their best leadership by Stalin's purges, their morale sapped by the bitter cold and the close, suffocating silence of the vast Finnish forest, Russian units often suffered at the hands of lightly armed, but swift moving Finnish ski- and cavalry troops. The Finns quickly learned how to seperate the Russian armor from it's infantry support, and would later return to deal with the enemy tanks, often at night. The Soviets would form defensive pockets, called "mottis" by the Finns, in an effort to save themselves, but this served only to isolate them more.
