Highway of Death - The Matrix Games version of East Front II

Lozovenka, 90km SSE of Kharkov: [Best played as Allied] By May 20th 1942, the Soviet 6th and 57th Armies had been encircled south of Kharkov and were desperately trying to withdraw to the east. Between them and the safety of the Donets River were German infantry divisions forming the front of the pocket and blocking their escape. The disorganized and desperate Russians concentrated their efforts in an attempt to punch a hole in the German formations at any cost. By May 24th they had succeeded in battering their way through the 6th and 389th Infantry Divisions and capturing Lozovenka west of Izyum. Early on the 25th the remnants of the 248th Rifle Division and supporting armor from the 133rd Tank Brigade continued their thrust when they encountered the German 1st Mountain Division entrenched in the hills east of Lozovenka. The fighting was marked by a savage fury born of desperation that turned the Russians last hope of escape into a highway of death!
