With its capture, the Russians could cut off numerous German units. One of the key routes of German escape was the Stolbtsky Hiway, which ran behind a series of low ridges. On July 1st, Rotmistrove's 5th Guards Army slammed into the German 170th Infantry Division (no more than a couple of reinforced battalions in reality), and threw them out of the town of Letornovski. A frantic call for assistance sent KampfGruppe Deitel rushing to help hold the vital Hill 621. As the Russians regrouped to continue the attack, the survivors formed a hasty defensive line on the ridges overlooking the Stolbtsky Hiway in an attempt to keep the road open so more of their comarades could escape the advancing Red tide.
