05 July, 1944
This is the second part of what is planned to be five part campaign
focusing on an armored kampfgruppe fighting during the Soviet
summer offensive in 1944. This is a very straight forward delay
defense. Our story picks up here.... Unfortunately, after Kampfgruppe
Beckmann's hard fought battle for Svissloch it was discovered
that the 9th Army was attempting a breakout further to the southwest.
But the fighting around Svissloch secured 9th Army's right flank
and made it possible for most of the Army to escape the Soviet's
trap. 4th Army to the north was not so lucky. Over the course
of the next few days it was surrounded, pounded and destroyed.
Only the very fortunate escaped in small groups, covering tens
of kilometers through enemy territory before making it to friendly
lines. The days following the Battle for Svissloch were filled
with many ferocious fights and delaying actions. The Germans
were trying desperately to slow the Soviet advance. This scenario
depicts one day's fighting as Kampfgruppe Beckmann is sent to
plug a hole and delay the Soviet Tank Corps bearing down on it
for as long as possible. As the game opens each battalion is
in an assembly area getting resuplied. The German will have
roughly 5-7 turns to roll his armor out of their assembly areas
and establish his defense. Infantry fighting positions have
already been established, but if the player wishes he will have
time to move his infantry units to new locations and begin digging
in. The PZGR Battalion is assembled in the most restrictive
terrain in the area and should be able to set up a good defense.
Obstacles and mines are already in place. I PZR Battalion,
along with the HVY AT Company and recon assets, are forward of
this line. Keep in mind, there is only one route through the
PZGR's lines so the withdrawal of I PZR must be well planned
and executed. The KG's engineers cleared a short road through
the woods to the rear of the southern battle position, just for
this purpose. II PZR Battalion is to set up to the rear of the
PZGR Battalion and is tasked with covering the rest of the Kampfgruppe's
withdrawal. Your mission is simple: Delay the advancing Soviet
Tank Corps for as long as possible, while preserving your combat
strength, and conduct an orderly withdrawal to the west.
