Uspenovka, 55km W of Stalino (Donetsk): [Best played against Human opponent] With a large part of Army Group South tied up in the Crimea and Kleist's First Panzer Army occupied with the drive toward Taganrog and Rostov, the Italians for the only time in the war became the advanced unit for the Axis in southern Russia and their drive east. Fighting Soviet rearguards and the autumn rains, which turned the roads into a sea of mud, they forced their way to the Sukiye Yali River, 55km from Stalino. Waiting on the other side at Uspenovka were the survivors of the Russian 274th Rifle Division, which had suffered heavy casualties at Uman. The task of taking the bridges and "kicking open the gate" to Stalino was given to the 3rd Celere Mobile Division. As the mists began to clear on October 17th, elements of the 1st Bersaglieri and 5th Novara Regiments with light tank support launched their attack. If successful the road to Stalino and the most important industrial region of the Soviet Union would be open.
