Dvinsk (Daugavpils), 200km SE of Riga: [Best played as Axis] As Operation Barbarossa commenced on June 22, the objective of the German 56th Panzer Corps commanded by General von Manstein was the vital bridges across the Dvina River at Dvinsk (Daugavpils), more than 200 miles deep into enemy territory. Despite having to deal with numerous counterattacks by the desperate Soviets, as the sun rose in the morning sky on the 26th, exactly four days after the commencement of hostilities, the lead elements of the 8th Panzer Division were outside Dvinsk. With most of the divisions units still hours away, the troops of the I Panzer Battalion/10th Panzer Regiment, III Rifle Battalion/8th Rifle Regiment and the 8th Motorcycle Battalion prepared to dash for the two big bridges that were the prize, before they could be destroyed.
