Meeting Engagement: Occasionally during the desperate weeks of autumn, 1944, German panzer units found themselves able and willing to strike back at the Russian onslaught.
Kampfgruppe Woehler, reinforced by fresh units from Budapest, pocketed Cavalry-Mechanized Group "Pliyev" near Debrecen. The Russian 6th Guards Tank Army struck back resulting in one of the wildest melees of the war. Here Group "Pliyev", led by the 7th Mechanized Corps, attempts to breakout of the pocket with the 5th Guards Tank Corps leading the 6th Guards Tank Army's effort to break through to them. Caught in the middle is Kampfgruppe Woehler desperately trying to contain Group "Pilyev" so other German forces can destroy it before it can escape.
