Soviet Assault on Fortifications: At the end of the spring, 1944 campaign in the Crimea, German and Rumanian forces were being pushed into an ever-shrinking ring around Sevastopol. As the Kriegsmarine and Rumanian Navy attempted to evacuate the 17th Army, the rear guard occupied a final defensive line just outside the city.
The Russian objective in the southern end of the line was the Sapun Heights, from where artillery could cover the whole anchorage. Here units of the Russian 19th Tank Corps and 2nd Guards Rifle Division, which are both from the Independent Coastal Army, engage an infantry regiment from the German 98th Infantry Division.
