Late in the war, just south and west of Vienna the retreating German 1st SS Panzer Corps was order to dig in and perform a defensive/delay role against overwhelming Russian armor forces. The area they were commanded to hold consisted of heavily forested alpine slopes over 900 meters high with many deep valleys, treacherous rivers, fast flowing streams, and poor roads. The LAH and HJ Divisions were considered reasonably defeated but could still muster enough retreating units and stragglers to be considerer as full combat units and although moral was very low together they made up two reinforced Regiments with significant armor support. Four Kampf Groups (Peiper,Gross, Kling and Reitzenstein), with medium and heavy armor along with battle hardened Panzergrenadiers dug in around a 10x10 Kilometer area of Corona peak, Laaben and Hainfeld strategically placing themselves in the path of the advancing Russian hordes in hopes of delaying their advance and allow retreating units from Italy and Austria safe passage through the Golsen River Valley into the heart of Bavaria and the Alpine region of Germany to safeguard Hitler's last pocket of defense.
