SS Hauptsturmfuhrer Jochen Peiper's 3rd Panzergrenadier Battalion were in billets around Podolkov on the 11th of February 1943 when they received the order to move out and escort remnants of the 320th 'Green Heart' Infantry Division through Russian lines and back to German positions. Peipers men located the survivors and were leading them back when they found the bridge over the Udy River at Krasnaya Polyana blocked by a reinforced Soviet Guards ski battalion. The SS Leibstandarte battalion deployed for immediate action.
