Mariental, Ukraine: [Best Played vs Human Opponent]: An offensive was launched during the beginning weeks of September in order to squeeze the Russians into a smaller pocket around Odessa. After two weeks of fighting, the Rumanians had made little headway. On the other hand, in the 1. Army sector, the 8. Infantry Division had attacked Mariental to the southeast of Odessa and made good progress. The two battalions of the attacking formation captured the town and proceeded to advance into the Russian 25th Infantry Divisions rear area. It was then when things went wrong. The Russians advanced behind the two battalions and cut off their line of retreat, forming a pocket. The trapped Rumanians would fight bitterly throughout the night of the 12th and in the morning of the 13th of September. The Rumanians would need to try to break out of the pocket if they were to survive...
