Dnestr River, 8 Kms S of Mogilev Podolski: [Best man:man] During the first month of the German invasion of Russia the Germans did not always have sufficient time to explore the area contiguous to a river before starting the crossing operation. While the two army groups in the north and center proceeded according to schedule, Army Group South made only slow progress. The German 75. and 22. Infantry Divisions (AGS) are crossing the river anxious to begin their drive to the Black Sea. At 0430 on 17 July both divisions leaped to the attack and crossed the river at several places. The initial assault was a complete success and quickly led to the occupation of the high ground on the east bank. It is now 0630 and a heavy shroud of smoke hangs over the area of the "Stalin Line". ver 1.2
