Stalingrad, Northern Factory District: [Best played against Human opponent or as Axis] After capturing most of the southern portion of Stalin's city along the Volga River, the Germans now focused their attacks against the sector dominated by the Tractor Factory. Although the production lines were no longer working, the Russians continued to repair tanks and send them back into the desperate fighting. The remnants of Russian units and fresh troops recently ferried across the Volga River were packed into a narrow strip of land. The troop density and losses would be unlike anything experienced so far in World War II, and the battle for Stalingrad would become known as "Verdun on the Volga". Designer's Notes: Thirteen separate attacks was the maximum number ever done by the Germans against the same sector in Stalingrad in one day. Most operations consisted of one or two attacks against a position. If successful, that position was consolidated, casualties removed, and reinforcements brought up for the next phase. Sometimes further attacks would be attempted the same day. Many times a company or battalion would not attempt any more attacks until the next day. This meant that one hour of combat per day was the norm for many units. The 50 turns for this scenario is an estimate of the number of hours of actual combat over five days. 50 turns, or five hours of combat, could in theory occur in just one day. However, the realities of Stalingrad - worn out, depleted units and heavy losses in leaders - meant that what had been accomplished in one day when the 1942 summer campaign began was now taking much longer. And the Germans were running out of time.
