"Wass Fallschirmjager" was probably the response of Gen.d.Inf. Graf von Brockdorff-Ahlefeld when he got news of Russian airborne troops landing to the north of Demyansk. As commander of II.Armee Korps he had enough worries already! His troops had been encircled for some time now in the Demyansk pocket. The mission of the parachuted 1st and 4th Airborne Brigade was to disrupt the lines of communication in the pocket. On the outside Russian troops were trying hard to eliminate six German divisions before they were relieved. The Germans immediately sent troops to destroy the Russian paratroopers! Every available unit or man that was not already engaged at the front were hurriedly formed into battle groups and sent to destroy this threat.
