Panzergruppe 1 was heading head over heels towards Ki�v and the foot soldiers of the infantry divisions were either busy mopping up pockets of resistance or trying hard to get forward on Russia's dusty roads. III Panzer Korps had already passed Zhitomir when reports came of strong forces north of the Zwiahel-Zhitomir road! This road, also known as Rollbahn "Nord", was the main supply line for that corps. To the north of this road, the Soviet 5th Army was assembling a strong force in order to strike at the northern flank of Panzergruppe 1. With elements of 9th Mechanised and 31st Infantry corps it was bearing down on this artery. The road itself was guarded by the SS Division "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler". This unit was not a green formation, but resembled more of a reinforced brigade than a division. It simply did not have the manpower to guard a continuous front! Very soon, the battle would start and the "boys of LAH" would have earned a high fighting repuation when the battle was done!
