Schoningen, 35km SE of Stettin, Poland: [Best played as Axis] Operation Sonnenwende was the name given to the last major German offensive of World War Two. This bold attack was planned by Guderian to strike against both flanks of the Soviet 1st Belorussian Front and cut it off from the rest of the Red Army, where its armored formations could be destroyed in the Kustrin area. The risk was great, as were the potential rewards! However, the danger proved to be too great for Hitler who reduced the offensive to a single blow by Army Group Vistula from the Stargard sector. Leading the attack on the right flank from near the eastern shore of Lake Madu against the 2nd Gds Tank Army, was Panzer Division "Holstein." Organized only days before the attack, "Holstein's" under strength formations had been hurriedly thrown together with little time for training. Although, with the enemy only 35 miles from Berlin the German troops were eager to strike a blow for the Fatherland! On February 16th near Schoningen, "Holstein's" spearhead smashed into an anti-tank screen from the 9th Gds Tank Corps before being engaged by tanks from the 50th Gds Tank Brigade, reinforced with IS-IIs from the 6th Gds Hvy Tank Regiment.
