North of Soerakarta, Java: The Japanese Sakaguchi Detachment arrived on Java on March 1st, at Kragan, attached to the 48th Division. This detachment had been added to the Java invasion upon completion of it's pivotal role in the capture of Balikpapan and Bandermassin on Borneo so it's troops were tested and very
familiar with the Dutch and their colonial troops. Being motorized for this operation, the unit immediately sped south and west from Kragan, with the ultimate goal of Soerakarta, located in central southeastern Java, in an ancient kingdom the Dutch called The Vorstenlanden. After racing through Poerwodadi on March 4th, the Matsumoto Unit, of the Sakaguchi Detachment, turned due south and made for Soerakarta; their objectives for the night being the bridges spanning the Bandjir Canal in the northern suberbs of Soerwakarta. At around 0030 hrs, on 5 March, the Japanese encounter resistance from elements of the Dutch 21st
Battalion and the locally raised Mankoe Negoro Battalion. This was going to be a tough fight to secure the canal bridges.
