Ambon Island, Molucca Islands. On 30 January, 1942 the Japanese landed on Ambon Is. The Kure 1st SNLF and attatched army troops landed on the north coast of Hitu-lama and the 228/58 Inf. Reg. on the SE coast of Hutamori. Dutch Lt. Col. J.R.L. Kapitz's Moluccan garrison troops assisted by the Australian Gull Force could not prevent the landings. The few Dutch detatchments in position to oppose the landings were quickly overwhelmed and the Japanese proceeded to advance toward Ambon Bay where all of the molitary objectives were located. The Japanese needed the airfields and needed to destroy the allied resistance. 3 days of fighting has been condenced into this scenario. The situation begins as deployed on the morning of 30 January.

My Japanese opponent had an OOB with a 3-1 advantage in troops that included armor, naval gun support, and air strikes. Allied forces had a handful of good combat units and lacked armor, adequate artillery support, and no air power. Only Allied advantage was huge amounts of terrain and spread out objectives that forced the Japanese to launch separate offensive drives that were not mutually supportive of each other. Allied forces were able to entrench on key objective hexes and wear down the Japanese troops over time with direct fire and use of their limited heavy artillery. Also, there were several opportunities to use Allied hit-and-run tactics that kept the Japanese player off balance and forced him to garrison multiple areas, siphoning combat units from the front lines.

It was a hard fought battle that resulted in an Allied Major Victory. It just goes to show that RS scenarios (especially Curt Cabbage ones) are not always as one-sided as they first appear.

Surprisingly exciting and entertaining scenario!
