Kananga, 20km N of Ormoc, Leyte, Philippines: [Best played as Allied] For the US 1st Calvary Division during late 1944, the struggle through northern Leyte's mountainous terrain in the Philippines, covering the 32nd Infantry Division's left flank, had been a costly ordeal and many of its squadrons had suffered heavy losses. Finally, the mountain barrier defended by Japan's 1st and 102nd Divisions had been breached opening the northern entrance to the Ormoc Valley. Due to their proven ability to move fast, the "light infantry" of the 12th Cavalry Regiment were selected to spearhead the advance south to linkup with regiments from the 77th Infantry Division pushing north from the port of Ormoc. Between the two American forces, remnants from the Japanese 1st Division had established strong points and pockets of resistance throughout the valley to delay the juncture as long as possible and insure it would not come cheap. The valley would have to be reconnoitered and cleared of all enemy resistance to guarantee safe passage for the following friendly troops. As the sun rose on the soggy morning of December 20th, both cavalry squadrons were poised near the village of Lonoy, prepared for another day in what had become know to the troopers as "Ambush Valley!"
