Bouganville Island:
Six days after the American landing on Bouganville Island the Japanese launched a counterlanding of their own to destroy the American beachhead from within.
The landing force was assembled from units of the 53rd and 54th Infantry Regiments of the Japanese 17th Infantry Division. However the landing was well spread out and the Japanese subordinate units could not assemble with each other in the darkness.
Meanwhile the Americans sent the 3rd Battalion of the 9th Marine Regiment to deal with the landings but in the darkness it attacked the separate Japanese units piecemeal. The fighting was inconclusive and the Marines called for reinforcements the next day. The 1st Battalion of the 3rd Marines joined them in the morning, but that was still not enough. In the afternoon they were joined by a third marine battalion, along with tank support, and together they eliminated the Japanese landing by the end of the day.
