Duropa Plantation, ESE of Buna, 160km NE of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: [Best played as Allied] By mid-November 1942, following long marches from Milne Bay and Port Moresby, the leading elements of the US 32nd Infantry and the 7th Australian Infantry Divisions were nearly in position to launch attacks against the Japanese Buna-Gona beachhead. First to strike at the ad-hoc grouping of enemy units dug in near the Duropa Plantation southeast of Buna were elements of the American 128th Infantry Regiment. However, Captain Yasuda commanding the Japanese left had been warned of the American approach and was ready. In a drenching downpour on November 19th, the 1st/128 Infantry Battalion moved forward along the coast road from Boreo while the 3rd/128 Infantry followed an inland trail on the left flank. Suddenly, as the GIs approached the recently constructed airstrip they were enveloped in a storm of machinegun and light mortar fire from bunkers hidden in the high grass and thick jungle growth. The bloody battle for Buna had begun!
Nice little fight.
