Asun, 680km NW of Singapore, Malaya: [Best played as Axis] In 1941, the centers of British military power in the Far East were the airfields in northern Malaya and the naval base at Singapore on the southern tip of the peninsula. As such Malaya was a key objective in the Japanese plan for expansion. In the morning hours of 8 December three divisions began landing along the northeast coast, from Singora to Kota Bharu. Once ashore the 5th Division, supported by tanks, immediately launched attacks down the east and west coasts forcing the 11th Indian Division to fight costly delaying actions, buying time to allow new defensive positions to be established further south. It was time the Japanese would not give them! Early on the 11th, Lt. Col. Saeki's Detachment, built around the 5th Recon Regiment reinforced with medium tanks and artillery, smashed through the 1st/14 Punjab Battalion at Changlun then followed the survivors south toward Asun. There the 2nd/1 Gurkha Rifles had established defensive positions covering the river with instructions to hold the Japanese spearhead until the 15th Brigade could form a solid defensive line at Jitra.
